While Western garment making relies heavily on sewing machines, traditional Kimono construction emphasizes hand-sewing techniques, which are essential for creating high-quality custom kimonos. A single bolt of fabric is used to craft one Kimono, minimizing waste fabric significantly. Traditional Kimono tailoring (和裁) is a dying art, making it increasingly challenging to find skilled craftspeople who can also make Yukata for the Maiko and Geiko of Kyoto. Evelyn learned the art of Kimono tailoring at the Nishijin Wasai Fashion School (西陣和裁ファッションスクール), where she expertly sewed by hand Yukata, lined Kimonos, and Hakama.
